Work to Get Ready for March 20-21 Vodden: D's Transmission

During the race we had some difficult with the  D transmission.  The shifting transition from 2nd to 3rd either need to be done under ~3,000rpm or some grinding ensued.  To monitor this some, we did get aggressive gear oil change after each day.  During this exchange we  diligently looked for parts and fine shavings.   We did not find much, so we kept running which resulted in race finishing effort.

We have seen something similar happen with the Z.  In that case the gear shifting sycro's rings failed and resulted in noticeable crewed metal clips that came out at each oil was exchanged.  After the race we extracted the transmission, gave it to Torch, and he successfully rebuilt it, and the transmission has not been a problem since.

For the D we did not see the debris, but the problem is likely the sycro rigs, Torch has agreed to break this one down too.  So, last week, Lugnut and Torch jumped on the extraction.  After several ziplock bags, grease everywhere, and two hours, the transmission was out.

Torch then took the transmission and demo it this week on his work bench. (note: the following image are graphic transmission parts.)

The report from this procedure is that the gears look in fine shape.  It is the sycro rings that took a hit and needed replacement.  So with an estimated $20 and labor to get it back together we now have a restored transmission.

Now we just need to remount the transmission, and we should be good to go.

Work to Get Ready for March 20-21 Vodden: Engines

Earlier this month we have had a chance to look at both cars and figure out the path to track.  That first step is for use to compression test motor and determine, if any has slipped away.  Here are the results.

Before & After

Track Rat Miata #2 is coming along.  Some rattle-can paint does wonders.  Maybe we can get the dash and lights to work this weekend.  We'll try anyways.
